Second
Annual Blue Moon Dinner
The
evening was a perfect temperature, the sun was setting and
Italian music was playing in the background. Soon the stars
were twinkling and the moon was shining brightly over our
east pond and friends and River Park supporters were chatting,
laughing, and drinking aromatic wine while enjoying a beautiful
night out on our trail.
The
2nd Annual Blue Moon Dinner on September 13 was a huge hit!
According to one of our guests it was a “Great Party
– everything was gorgeous!” This year we reached
our max and SOLD OUT. More than 285 guests attended and
enjoyed the auction, wine and dinner on the trail.
The
silent auction hosted over 90 items ranging from museum
tickets, art, jewelry, theater tickets, dinner passes, a
guitar, a fountain, an oak tree, tours, yoga classes, photographs
and
more. The live auction was energized with our auctioneer
Matt Gorham as he auctioned off cabins in Palomar, Big Bear
and Utah, a stunning silver heron necklace by Duane Pillsbury,
and a beautiful heron stained glass piece by Jeff Peer.
More live auction items included an egret garden sculpture
by Carl Glowienki, a Julian Bed & Breakfast, a Barona
Valley Resort Getaway, and last but not least, the favorite
of our River Park auction, an adorable, cuddly puppy. A
puppy has been extremely popular the last two years and
this little golden retriever mix definitely stole everyone’s
heart throughout the evening.
The
2nd Annual Once in a Blue Moon Dinner did not disappoint
our guests. As Catherine Nelson from South Bay said, “Put
us down for next year!” It was a wonderful night;
the atmosphere under the twinkle lights was simply enchanting
and one to remember.

Annual 5 K "Run for the San Diego River"
Trail Run/Walk
Lakeside’s
River Park held the 2nd Annual 5K Trail Run / Walk for the San Diego
River on Saturday, May 17, 2008 in conjunction with San Diego River
Days. Despite the heat, over 300 people participated in this year's
event.
The
race started and finished at Mapleview and Channel and in between
participants covered a beautiful off-street course that traveled
through the River Park, around the ponds, west of the River Park
and onto Lakeside Land, and back on the long stretch of the trail
next to Willowbrook Golf Course. They were able to see and appreciate
the improvements made along the trail since the last race. Lodge
pole fencing lines the northern side of the trail, an overlook has
been built on the west pond, and more newly planted dedicated oaks
and sycamores line the trail.
This
annual trail run/walk is geared for all ages to enjoy. This year
we had walkers from 2 to 89; it was fun for everyone. Awards were
given to the top 3 finishers in each age group.
Our
thanks to our generous sponsors:
and
special thanks to Tommy Hough and Treehuggers
International for their support.
River
Park Trail Preview and Dedication Planting
Lakeside’s
River Park Conservancy celebrated its Trail Preview and Second Annual
Dedication Planting at the Park on Saturday, February 9, 2008. Over
500 visitors had the opportunity to explore the newly constructed
trail from Channel Road to Riverside Drive, see the restored plant
areas, visit trees that were planted last year, and watch for native
birds and animals. The weather cooperated by giving us beautiful
blue skies and warm temperatures.
There
were booths set up along the trail and interpretive signs were placed
in strategic locations to help visitors appreciate the new River
Park and its benefits to the environment and the community.
Supporters
who had purchased trees for the event also had an opportunity to
choose a place for their tree. They were assisted in the planting
by the Marines from the Single Marine Program, Miramar, who generously
donated their time and muscle power to the event. In addition, the
Lakeside Kiwanis seeded the edge of the trail with native wildflowers.
